Infertility Services
Infertility is defined as an inability to get pregnant after at least one year of trying. 10% of couples in the United States are infertile. Infertility may be caused by more than one factor. Some factors are easy to find and treat, while others are not. The factor may relate to the woman or the man.
Infertility evaluation may include
· Medical history
· Physical exam
· Semen analysis
· Routine lab studies
· Tests to check for a normal uterus and open fallopian tubes
o Hysterosalpingography: This procedure tests for blockages in the fallopian tubes that may be causing infertility. An x-ray is taken after a small amount of dye is injected through the cervix into the uterus.
o Laparoscopy: During this surgery doctors use a small lighted camera called a laparoscope to see inside the abdomen. Using the laparoscope, doctors check for abnormalities in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or uterus.
o Hysteroscopy. This procedure lets the doctor look inside the uterus. A small lighted camera called a hysteroscope is placed through the cervix. During this procedure, the doctor can correct minor problems or get a sample of tissue to study.
Infertility can be treated in many ways, including lifestyle changes, medication, surgery, and assisted reproductive technologies.
