Urogynecology
Urogynecology is dedicated to the treatment of women with pelvic floor disorders. These include herniation of the pelvic organs or pelvic organ prolapse and leakage of urine (urinary incontinence).
Pelvic Organ Prolapse: This is the falling or bulging of the vaginal wall, bladder, rectum or uterus. It is a type of hernia which often leads to feelings of pressure, urinary problems and decreased physical activity due to discomfort.
Urinary Incontinence: This is the unexpected leaking of urine. While many women may have a small amount of leakage occasionally, women suffering from urinary incontinence have several accidents daily. This can lead to avoiding certain activities and a decrease in quality of life. The two main categories of urinary incontinence are over active bladder and stress incontinence.
Over active bladder: This is usually treated using medical therapy and bladder retraining. Occasionally surgery is required to fix a dropped bladder to help with these issues.
Stress Incontinence: This is caused from damage to the pelvic floor due to trauma (such as childbirth), weak muscles in the pelvic floor and/or genetics. It is often treated with physical therapy, non-surgical support (pessary) and surgery.
