Hysteroscopic tubal occlusion(Essure procedure)
Tubal occlusion is a type of permanent sterilization performed in the doctor’s office. Using a hysteroscope (a thin telescope designed to see inside the uterus), a small implant is placed into each fallopian tube. Over the next 3 months, the implant scars the tube shut. This stops the sperm and egg from meeting and protects against pregnancy. A special X-Ray or Hysterosalpingogram is then performed to ensure that the blockage is complete. This type of sterilization has the advantage of avoiding the risks of general anesthesia and being incision free. A light sedative (valium) is used for relaxation during the procedure.
